breadless burger

While bread will always be my one true lurveeeee, sometimes you just want to lighten it up with an alternative bun option. And, sometimes you want to get really gluttonous with a bun that is probably a whole meal in and of itself.

Of course, burgers are the best and what kind of knowledge do you have of this American food group, if you haven’t tried them in all their different iterations?

Here are some bun ideas that are really out of the… bun?

1. Potatoes

Potatoes make great buns, because they’re starchy and filling but also acceptable for those who are paleo or wheat-free. Feel free to slice a potato into disks to make sliders or make a mash and then deep fry them in round shapes. Better yet, put the mash into a waffle iron and make waffle fry buns!

2. Portobello Mushrooms

This is a very popular option because of their earthy taste and perfect shape. Portobello caps are great both raw and cooked, but we like them slightly grilled.

3. Sticky Rice

This is certainly different, but sticky rice holds surprisingly well when made correctly. Check out this Thai recipe by She Simmers.

4. Waffles

Waffles make burgers acceptable to eat in the morning, right?

5. Lettuce & Greens

I you’re looking to keep it lean, lettuce and greens (specifically romaine and raw collards).

6. Bell Peppers

You might not have ever seen this before, but if you cut a bell pepper right down the middle it makes the perfect casing for a burger.

7. Sweet Potato

Same rules apply to sweet potatoes as they do for potatoes.

8. Eggplant

You can make a skinny, long burger/sandwich with thicker julienned slices of aubergine length-wise or make round “buns” for small, bite-sized sliders.

9. Tomatoes

Slice a tomato in half and pile it on in the middle. It’s as easy as that.

10. Ramen

I’m not sure I can ever really get behind this, but it certainly has been done. See how to make your own here.

12. Seaweed

Seaweed is surprisingly thin but can also be a light, salty home to any hamburger wrap.

13. Pineapple

People just love to mix savory and sweet and pineapple tops the charts when it comes to savory “exotic” (big quotations here) dishes like pizza, burgers, etc. etc.
