popcorn month toppings

The other day I was at the movie theaters and happened to think to myself: “Hm, I wonder if I should get some popcorn for good measure?”

The answer is always yes. Why it is that popcorn is the best treat ever while you’re watching a movie, I’m truly not sure. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that it’s so addictive – so you can eat it continuously for 90 minutes without getting bored, or maybe it has more to do with the fact that it’s so tasty and satisfying. We’re not sure, but we are sure there is some historical explanation to all of it.

On a different note, the kind of popcorn you’re getting at a movie is probably plain or extra extra buttery. If you’re at a ball game, you may even get Cracker Jacks – a caramel-coated popcorn.

However, we know there’s so much more to popcorn. As a matter of fact, the possibilities are seemingly endless and waiting to be unlocked. Here are some popcorn toppings just in time for popcorn month. Movie optional.

1. Yeast

Ok, this one may be hard to wrap your head around unless you are already a health but, but we promise it’s delicious. Nutritional yeast is slightly cheesy tasting but packed with vitamin B12, so that’s a snack you won’t even feel sorry about gobbling up before the movie’s even started!

2. Chocolate Peanut Butter

If everything could be coated in chocolate and peanut butter for me, it would be. Drizzle on some chocolate and peanut butter syrups and then put the mix in the fridge. An easier option would be to toss in some mini Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups! It’s truly the best of both worlds.

3. Rosemary Parmesan

Looking to get a little fancier with it? Drizzle on a rosemary parmesan aioli to your homemade bucket. Don’t forget the salt!

4. Tapatio & Lime

For me, not only does it not get more delicious than this, but it doesn’t get easier either. On some freshly popped popcorn, pour on the Tapatio hot sauce and drizzle on the lime. Put this out for everyone to enjoy at your next party (maybe Halloween??) and everyone will surely be praising  you.

5. Cocoa

Give your buttery popcorn a sweet boost by dusting on sugar and cocoa powder. Maybe you can add in some chocolate malt balls for the full monty.

6. Cinnamon Sugar

For popcorn that tastes like a sugar cookie, butter, cinnamon and sugar should give the perfect cookie dough-esque taste.

7. Wasabi

Wasabi is basically good with any and every kind of snack. Think about it: Aren’t wasabi peas so good? Infuse the wasabi in the butter that you pour onto your popcorn for a spicy twist. Just make sure not to put too much or you will get that weird numbing sensation!

8. Marshmallow

In all honesty, you can try marshmallow or white chocolate or maybe even both. On a sheet pan, spread out your popcorn and pour on the fluff or melted white chocolate. Pour on sprinkles and it essentially becomes a birthday cake batter. As a matter of fact, you can literally pour on birthday cake mix if you really want it to taste like a cake.

9. Everything But The Kitchen Sink

There are no limit, so there’s no reason why you can’t put in any and every junk food, candy or snack into your bucket for the ultimate snack-a-thon. My picks would be: peanut M&Ms, pretzels, Sour Patch Kids, Fritos. Am I getting too crazy here? Oh, well.
